HKS Inc./Wingler & Sharp was selected to design renovations at the Womack Army Medical Hospital and Ambulatory Care Center at Fort Bragg working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District and the HQ USAF Health Facilities Division.

 

The design team is altering 80,000 square feet of the medical center to reorganize, modernize and better align outpatient, inpatient, support and administrative areas including primary care clinics, emergency department, obstetrician/gynecologist and the post-partum/ante-partum nursing unit.

 

 

“When designed in the late 1980s, the hospital emulated a style reminiscent of Prairie Style architecture,” said Francisco Gonzalez, principal with HKS. “The goal of the renovation is to complement the existing space while improving space function and updating the style to incorporate evidence-based and best-practice design, ergonomics, patient satisfaction, sustainability and a healing environment.”

 

 

According to HKS Interior Designer Jeff Kabot, by incorporating evidence-based design into the project, the team can increase operational efficiencies, reduce costs, enhance patient and staff safety and satisfaction, and retain healthcare staff. “Our ultimate objective is to create a thoughtful balance between the newly renovated and the existing space, creating an efficient, healing, comforting and nurturing environment for patients, their families and staff.”

 

Construction phasing will become a critical issue as the medical center will remain active during construction.
